Description
It's been more than two years since Jon Evans and his family left Pennsylvania, hoping to find a safe place to live, yet Jon remains haunted by the deaths of those he loved. His prowess on a soccer field has guaranteed him a home in a well-protected enclave. But Jon is painfully aware that a missed goal, a careless word, even falling in love, can put his life and the lives of his mother, his sister Miranda, and her husband, Alex, in jeopardy. Can Jon risk doing what is right in a world gone so terribly wrong?

This one is a complicated one for sure. It is absolutely not poorly written, it is as well written as the previous novels in the series. It's gruesome. Awful things happen in this story and most of them are not out of control. I think that's the big difference between the horror of the previous books and the horror of this book: it's mostly perpetrated by the main character. The main character is not a likable person, but a protagonist doesn't have to be likable to be good. So yeah, this book was hard to read because we were forced into the mind of an individual shaped by the events of the previous books... and he's not a good person. On top of all of that, this is probably the book in the series with the most death in the main cast of characters. It's hard, and when you think it's going good, one more beloved character dies in yet another brutal way.

This book was devastating, so be sure to steel yourself for what is to come if you decide to read it.
